Harvey Spector moved to Redding from Los Angeles in 1999 after graduating from Art Center College of Design. He primarily did product and architectural photography. For over a decade he also worked as a freelance photographer for the Getty Research Institute. During these years he developed a high level of technical expertise that is evident in his personal work. He has exhibited widely and his work is in many private collections.

Harvey is moved to photograph by the joy of visual discovery; by the sheer wonder of really looking at things. The process is full of magic and mystery providing him with an avenue of self-expression. His best photos often expose a portal into darker worlds making him and, hopefully others, experience inarticulable emotions.

While he thinks of himself as happy and takes much pleasure in life, his images often conjure loss and abandonment. Beyond mystery and dramatic lighting, he finds visual beauty in these objects and a healing process takes place, repairing him and the world.

I first became interested in photography during high school when friends told me it was the easiets class to cut. Of course, it turned out to be the one class I attended faithfully, and I’ve never looked back. After over 30 years as a commercial photographer in the San Fransisco Bay area, I’m now able to slow down, explore my creative side and experiment with new techniques and styles, some of which you can see on display here. I look for beauty where others see despair. There is a strength of spirit in my subjects, human or otherwise, that have weathered hard times. They may not have necessarily triumphed in the traditional sense of the word, but they have adapted and endured, a victory in and of itself. I try to capture bits and pieces of their stories but leave just a little bit of mystery for the viewer to ponder and figure out for themselves.

My work has won numerous awards, and has been displayed in many galleries, including the Thomas Lee Gallery in Ashland, Oregon and The Vault in Cambria, California. Solo Showings of my photographs have been held at eh Petaluma Museum and the Herold Mahoney Gallery in Petaluma California. My works can also be found in private collections across the country.
